The Extinct is a comprehensive Minecraft Bedrock Add-On introducing 21 new creatures, dozens of items, gear sets, blocks and more, designed to transform your survival experience by bringing extinct creatures back to the Minecraft universe.

Creatures spawn naturally across Overworld, Nether and End biomes, and occasionally leave Nests. These nests contain eggs used for hatching and taming.

To hatch an egg, place it in a nest. Eggs placed into Warm Nests hatch faster. Hold a furry carpet and interact with a regular nest to make it cozy and warm.

Interact with a placed egg while holding Honeycomb to wax it. A waxed egg never hatches, so you can keep it as long as you want. Scrape the wax off with an axe and the hatch timer continues. Waxing works on all 12 egg-laying creatures, and a waxed egg stays waxed if you break it and place it again.

Tamed creatures grow from baby to adult over time or when fed.

Feed a Golden Dandelion to a baby creature to pause its growth. It stays a baby until you feed it another Golden Dandelion.

Feed a creature its favourite food to tame it. Each attempt has a chance to work, so keep feeding until it succeeds. Every creature can be tamed in the wild, including the aggressive ones, and the chance scales with how dangerous the creature is.

20%Rocktail, Spikeback, Thorncrest, Skyreach, Cloudclaw, Razorjaw, Mammosk, Void Runner, Ender Wing
15%Sabertooth, Frosthorn, Coralback, Swiftstride
10%Carnoravager, Ashclaw, Venomfang
5%Grumble, Voidspine

Taming items for the aggressive creatures:

  • Grumble: any raw meat or Rotten Flesh
  • Carnoravager: any raw meat
  • Ashclaw: any meat, raw or cooked, or Rotten Flesh
  • Venomfang: Echo Shard or Sculk Vein
  • Voidspine: Chorus Fruit

Hatching an egg still works and gives you a tame creature from birth.

Rideable creatures include Rocktail, Razorjaw, Void Runner, Ender Wing, Mammosk, Frosthorn, Coralback, Swiftstride, Ironthumb, Voidspine, Carnoravager, and Sabertooth. Some offer gliding, others speed, inventory, or defensive perks. Coralback only accepts a saddle as a tamed adult.

Riding uses a wide camera by default, similar to the Happy Ghast. Turn on Legacy Camera in the settings menu to get the old close camera back. The change applies when you mount again, or after you land if you are flying.

You get the settings item when you first join a world. Craft another from 4 Sticks around 1 Leather.

Interact with your Grumble while riding it to make it roar.

Tameable creatures breed using the same food that tames them. Feed two tamed adults of the same species to get a baby.

Coralback is the first water mount. Ride it and you breathe underwater, and you get night vision to see through the dark. Nearby players within 4 blocks get the water breathing too. It takes no damage from magma blocks and pushes up through bubble columns instead of being dragged down. Wild Coralbacks defend their waters, so bring fish, not weapons.

Swiftstride is the fastest mount on land and takes no fall damage. It travels the mesa in small flocks. Feed it Wildflowers to build its trust, then hop on. It throws you off a few times before it accepts you, the same way a horse does.

Ironthumb farms for you. Ride it through your fields and interact to harvest every mature crop around you. Wheat, Carrots, Potatoes, Beetroots, and Cocoa are replanted, and one seed or crop is used for the replant. Stems, Sugar Cane, Bamboo, Torchflower, and Pitcher Plant are harvested without replanting.

Creatures drop a wide variety of crafting components used for gear, trading, and taming.

Shimmer Feathers are edible. Eat one and you glow for 2 minutes, which lights up the ground around you as you walk. The item then goes on a 2 minute cooldown. The glow ends early if you change dimension.

Update 1.1 08/12/2025

Fixed and Changed

  • Fixed a content error caused by the Skyreach drinking animation.
  • Fixed a content error caused by the Flute Fragment.
  • Renamed the Void Spine item to Voidspine Totem so it matches the guidebook.
  • Corrected the guidebook: regular nests do not speed up hatching, only Warm Nests do.
  • Clarified in the guidebook that Grumble, Ashclaw and Venomfang cannot be tamed by feeding. Hatch their eggs instead. Their bestiary pages now show this in the Tameable section.
  • Clarified the Grumble page: Grumbles only spawn around your world once a fossil has been thawed, and the page now separates fossil spawning from regular spawning.
  • Corrected the Rocktail page. Rocktails are tamed with Spider Eyes, not apples.
  • Fixed a spelling error on the Ashclaw page.
Update 1.2 01/09/2026

Added and Updated

  • Three new creatures. Coralback is the first water mount and gives its rider water breathing and night vision. Swiftstride is the fastest mount on land and takes no fall damage. Ironthumb harvests and replants your crops while you ride it.
  • Every creature can now be tamed in the wild. Hatching an egg is no longer the only way to get an aggressive creature on your side.
  • Taming chance is now tiered by how dangerous a creature is, from 30% per attempt down to 5%.
  • New mounts. Voidspine, Carnoravager and Sabertooth can now be saddled and ridden, along with the three new creatures.
  • Waxed Eggs. Wax a placed egg with Honeycomb to stop it hatching, and scrape the wax off with an axe to continue.
  • Forever Young. Feed a Golden Dandelion to a baby creature to pause its growth, and another to let it grow up.
  • Shimmer Feathers can now be eaten for 2 minutes of glow, and Swiftstride drops them too.
  • Heavy Leather and the Heavy Leather Armour set, crafted from Ironthumb's drops.
  • New riding camera. Riding now uses a wider camera by default, with a Legacy Camera toggle in the new settings menu.
  • Settings item. You get one when you first join a world, and you can craft another from 4 Sticks around 1 Leather.
  • Interact with your Grumble while riding it to make it roar.
  • Guidebook pages for the new creatures, items and mechanics, plus updated taming rules and Biome Index rows.

Fixed and Changed

  • Retired the hatch-only taming mark in the guidebook. Every tameable creature now uses the same mark.
  • Raised the Carnoravager taming chance from 1% to 10%.
  • Fixed the guidebook names for Ashclaw and Cloudclaw, which were still listed under their old names.
  • Pterodactyl nests now spawn adults.
  • Thorncrest no longer spawns in trees.
  • Sitting creatures no longer follow their owner.
  • Sabertooth can no longer be mounted while scavenging, and re-clicking no longer restarts the dig.
  • Mammoth babies can be saddled after they grow up.
  • Creative spawn eggs now give a tamed creature for species that normally need hatching.
  • Flying creatures no longer bob up and down while sitting.
  • Fixed the Blueberry Bush texture after a Minecraft update.
  • Fixed creatures behaving badly around the Dragons Add-On.
